Introduction to optimizing WiFi
This article describes several methods to optimize the signal strength at the receipt and issuance. Optimizing wifi is on two levels. First of a software point of view, for example by setting optimal use of the canal. Then optimization occurs in a material point of view, for example by choosing the antenna of your access point.
Optimization by the choice of wifi equipment
The optimization starts with the purchase of equipment. Access points wifi / client wifi cards are not designed in the same way and do not possess the same characteristics.
There are two parameters to which we must be careful. This is the threshold for the receipt and transmission power. These two parameters are measured in decibels (dB). The threshold for receipt represents the reception sensitivity of the device while the power of broadcast represents the force at which the signal is emitted.
The reception threshold is measured in decibels (dB) negative. The more the bottom is, the better the reception is.
The power emission is measured in decibels (dB) positiv. The greater the number is high, the better the emission is.
Wifi Optimization by the choice of placement wifi equipment
You should know that any technology using the airwaves is not an exact science regarding the placement and orientation of wireless devices. It is not possible to predict the impact of a barrier on the signal. Similarly the operation of other wireless domestic devices (fixed wireless telephone, radio, etc ...) or even the operation of a microwave oven are succeptibles curb see blurring the wireless signal.
Only testing can determine the optimal location of the devices and their antennae. It further indicated that the vertical / horizontal antenna is very important, especially in the case of périhériques in which the antennae is often integrated to the horizontal. In the latter case, it should be known that the cardinal guidance device can be varied enormously signal quality.
WiFi Optimization by Software way
The software optimization concerns the adjustment of the various actors in a wireless network. The main factor is the selected channel. Most handsets wifis are set by default to use the channel 7. Few users change this setting. It is therefore necessary to choose the channel least used to not having to share the carrier frequency.
The choice of network protection is also a factor depressing the ability of the wireless network. A network unprotected will be faster than a network protected. WebkeySoft strongly recommends the use of encryption type WPA / PSK or WPA/PSK2 to protect a network. The alternative allows more or less easily piracy network!
MIMO, signal optimization by using multiple antenna
Some access points offer a feature of self-appointed selection of antenna called MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output, ie multiple receiving and emission). These categories of multi-antenna access points automatically choose the best combination of antenna relative to the channel in measured reflection and resonance signal. This allows a wireless unit to transmit more effectively the data inside the premises.
Atheros Super G: wifi to 108Mb/s
Super G is a proprietary technology of Atheros manufacturer. It uses the MIMO principle coupled with a compression technology and a multi-channel. This combination optimizes the performance of 802.11g protocol. The limit of the transmission rate level up from 54Mb/s to 108Mb/s, this is achieved by the use of two 54Mb/s 802.11g channels.
Other manufacturers have since acquired a Super G licence and commercialized Xtreme G and Super G products. In general, the Super-G products from different vendors are interoperable in the Super G mode.
